Nneka Ogwumike has concluded a fifteen-year professional basketball career following her final appearance with the Los Angeles Sparks in a narrow seventy-six to seventy-five defeat against the Golden State Valkyries. During her farewell performance at Crypto.com Arena, the veteran forward recorded seventeen points, fifteen rebounds, and five assists.
Her illustrious career features a Rookie of the Year award in 2012, a league championship and Most Valuable Player honors in 2016, eleven All-Star selections, eight All-WNBA Team recognitions, and seven All-Defensive nods. Beyond her statistics on the court, Ogwumike served as president of the WNBA Players Association starting in 2016 and spearheaded union efforts to opt out of the prior Collective Bargaining Agreement while helping negotiate a new deal featuring transformative player benefits.
Following the conclusion of her final game, Sparks teammate Cameron Brink posted a tribute on social media to express appreciation for Ogwumike's leadership and mentorship. Brink thanked the retiring star for an unforgettable season and acknowledged the impact of her veteran presence on younger players in Los Angeles.
Although the Sparks missed the postseason, Ogwumike's influence is expected to endure as a standard for future generations of the franchise.
