Retired WNBA star Nneka Ogwumike has sparked speculation regarding the league's vacant commissioner position after posting a cryptic video on social media. While she previously expressed on a podcast that she currently feels unqualified for the role, she has not ruled out the possibility of pursuing the job in the future.
The position will open following the 2026 season when current commissioner Cathy Engelbert steps down. Other potential candidates mentioned for the vacancy include New York Liberty CEO Keia Clarke and former player Swin Cash.
During her career, Ogwumike served as union president and played a key role in negotiating a collective bargaining agreement that increased the salary cap from $1.5 million to $7 million. She retired with 11 All-Star selections and ranks fourth on the league's all-time scoring list, finishing her final season with averages of 17.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
Her last professional appearance occurred on September 24, where she recorded 17 points and 15 rebounds in a narrow loss to the Golden State Valkyries. Earlier in October, she was honored at the National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award ceremony.
