New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo is embracing a deliberate, long-term strategy to wear down opponents rather than chasing immediate big gains. Despite leading the NFL with 68 carries this season without a single run of 15 or more yards—his longest being just 13 yards—Skattebo insists his restrained approach is intentional.
'Early in the year, I like to punish my opponents,' he explained, suggesting that by absorbing contact and limiting explosive plays now, he’ll exploit relaxed defenses later in the season. The Giants’ rushing attack has been stifled, averaging just 3.7 yards per carry, with Najee Harris managing only an 11-yard long run himself.
Coach John Harbaugh acknowledged the team’s struggles, noting, 'Defenses are playing us pretty well,' while also hinting at potential improvements through play-action and better execution down the stretch. The Giants’ Week 4 win over the Arizona Cardinals at MetLife Stadium underscored the challenge, as Skattebo’s linemen emphasized their preference for establishing the run game, even in heavy rain conditions that could favor pass-heavy strategies.
Meanwhile, the Washington Commanders—ranked sixth in run defense—pose a formidable obstacle, allowing just 93.9 rushing yards per game while ranking 25th in pass defense, adding pressure on Skattebo and the Giants to refine their ground game before the season’s midpoint.
