East Carolina Pirates quarterback Emory Williams delivered a breakout performance in their conference opener, leading a late-game surge against Rice Owls. Struggling through the first three weeks of the season without their starting offensive players, ECU found its rhythm with Williams at the helm, who threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score.
The Pirates' offense, which had been stagnant early, exploded in the third and fourth quarters, outgaining Rice 376-233 yards. Running back TJ Engleman Jr.
had a standout game with 136 rushing yards and a touchdown, while wide receiver Ray Ray Joseph made his mark with two touchdown catches on six receptions for 68 yards. The Pirates' defense also played a pivotal role, with East Carolina recording 12 tackles for loss and shutting down Rice’s offense after a slow start.
Williams’ leadership and the offensive trio’s combined efforts helped ECU overcome a 9-7 deficit in the final quarter, securing a 28-12 victory in their first conference matchup of the season.
