World No. 4 Ben Shelton, the US Open finalist, suffered an unexpected exit in the third round of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, falling to French qualifier Arthur Gea in straight sets.
The upset marked Shelton’s first defeat at the tournament, ending his bid to defend his form ahead of the ATP Finals. Despite his status as a top seed, Shelton admitted he was outplayed by the 56th-ranked Gea, who secured a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) victory.
The loss also disrupted Shelton’s momentum, as he had previously qualified for the ATP Finals following a strong win in his opening match. Meanwhile, other top players like Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev faced early setbacks in the tournament, with Djokovic losing to Hubert Hurkacz in the second round just days after his China Open triumph.
Valentin Vacherot, the defending champion, continued his winning streak, adding to the competitive atmosphere of the event.
