A Missouri high school football referee has been placed on indefinite suspension after video evidence showed him physically intervening during a player’s touchdown celebration. During Thursday night’s game between Glendale and Kickapoo, referee Kevin Elmer was captured on camera grabbing Glendale wide receiver Joelle Rover by the jersey in the end zone, halting her celebration and apparently addressing her directly.
The incident drew immediate backlash from Glendale head coach Frank Tristan, who confronted the officiating crew afterward, arguing that the referee had no need to touch his player. The controversy overshadowed a one-sided victory for Glendale, which won 35–6 despite earlier receiving two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
Rover, a 6-foot-3 senior with multiple college offers, finished last season with 11 touchdown receptions and 1,017 receiving yards, adding another layer of attention to the incident.
