During Thursday night's victory against the Patriots, Bears head coach Ben Johnson initially opted to send out the punt unit in the final quarter. However, kicker Cairo Santos stepped forward to advocate for a 58-yard field goal attempt, despite having missed a 53-yard try earlier in the game and having never converted from that distance previously in his career.
After an injury stoppage provided a chance for conversation, Santos conveyed his confidence to special teams coordinator Richard Hightower. Hightower relayed the request to Johnson, who ultimately decided to trust his kicker.
Santos rewarded that faith by driving the game-clinching kick straight down the center of the uprights.
