The Wisconsin Badgers suffered another setback in their season opener against UCLA, falling 17-7 in a game where their offense was largely ineffective. Quarterback Colton Joseph managed just 66 passing yards on 6 of 16 attempts, while the Badgers' ground game also faltered, with running backs Darrion Dupree and Abu Sama III combining for just 54 yards on 12 carries.
The offensive line’s struggles were evident, as Wisconsin managed only 12 combined rushing attempts, with Joseph accounting for 15 of his own carries. Penalties and third-down inefficiency further compounded the issues, as the Badgers averaged a mere 9.4 yards to go on those critical downs, leaving little room for error in a stagnant offense.
The receiving corps faced similar challenges, with no wideout managing more than two catches and several costly drops, including a missed touchdown opportunity from Malachi Coleman. Wisconsin’s six deep receivers rotated frequently but failed to create separation, leaving defenses to swarm the passing game.
Tight ends Grant Stec and Ryan Schwendeman also saw limited success, with Stec’s 64.4 PFF grade standing out as the highest among offensive players. The Badgers’ offensive line and play-calling came under scrutiny, as the team’s inability to establish a run game forced Joseph into a passing-heavy approach that yielded minimal results.
