Austin Wells did more than reward the Yankees’ belief in him with huge Game 1

New York catcher Austin Wells justified general manager Brian Cashman keeping him through the trade deadline by delivering a stellar performance in Game 1. Wells drove in the opening run with a second-inning single against lefty Payton Tolle, setting the tone for a dominant 9-0 victory over Boston in The Bronx.

Wells later added another single against southpaw Alec Gamboa and a sacrifice fly against Brayan Bello. Teammates George Lombard Jr., Anthony Volpe, Spencer Jones, Ali Sánchez, Ben Rice, and Alec Gamboa also featured in the contest, alongside opposing pitchers Tolle and Bello.
