Auburn University has permanently dismissed linebacker Xavier Atkins from its football program following his suspension for Saturday’s 27–24 victory over Georgia. The decision, announced Monday night, removes Atkins from the Tigers’ roster ahead of their upcoming rivalry game against his former team, LSU.
The junior had been suspended for the Georgia matchup due to disciplinary concerns, with head coach Alex Golesh declining to disclose specifics at the time. Atkins, a standout defensive player, recorded 37 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and one interception this season, ranking fifth in the SEC in tackles for loss behind only Elijah Melendez on the Tigers’ roster.
His departure creates opportunities for Melendez, Bryce Deas, and Demarcus Riddick, who combined for 17 tackles in the Georgia win while limiting the Bulldogs to just 113 rushing yards. Auburn, now 4–2, will host No.
18 LSU at Jordan-Hare Stadium this Saturday.
Atkins transferred to Auburn after beginning his college career at LSU, where he earned All-American honors in 2025 with 84 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and nine sacks. His SEC-leading 17 tackles for loss that season earned him preseason first-team All-SEC recognition.
Despite his absence, Auburn’s defense held strong against Georgia, the nation’s top-ranked team, with Melendez and Deas stepping up as key contributors. The Tigers’ decision to part ways with Atkins follows a pattern of disciplinary issues, as he also missed the start of the season opener against Southern Miss for similar reasons.
