Auburn football fans erupted in celebration at Toomer’s Corner after the Tigers stunned No. 1 Georgia 27-24 in Athens, snapping a nine-game losing streak in the historic rivalry.
The victory marked Auburn’s first win over Georgia since 2017 and its first over a top-ranked Bulldogs team since 1942, validating the progress made by first-year head coach Alex Golesh, whose squad improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play despite starting down 14-0. Auburn’s comeback included a 24-point surge in the second half, capped by a game-sealing 34-yard field goal by kicker Alex McPherson as time expired after Georgia’s Gunner Stockton turned the ball over three times, including a late fumble recovered by Auburn’s Sylvester Smith-Reed.
Quarterback Byrum Brown anchored the resurgence with 115 rushing yards and a touchdown on 26 carries, along with 150 passing yards and another score, becoming the first player since Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray to record at least 150 passing and 100 rushing yards against a No. 1-ranked team.
The Tigers also overcame 11 penalties to secure the upset, with their defensive stand and clutch red-zone execution proving decisive in the end.
