The Houston Astros have confirmed they will not renew manager Joe Espada’s contract after three seasons, ending his tenure that included two American League West championships. Espada, who took over following Dusty Baker’s retirement and had previously served as Houston’s bench coach since 2018, led the team to a 256-229 record while managing a roster with both strengths and notable weaknesses.
His departure follows the Astros’ August decision to part ways with general manager Dana Brown, leaving Espada’s future uncertain even before this announcement. Beyond his managerial role, Espada has a distinguished coaching background, having worked with the New York Yankees, Florida/Miami Marlins, and as a hitting coach in the Marlins’ system before joining their big-league staff in 2010.
He also represented Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic since 2013, adding international experience to his resume. The move heightens intrigue around Seattle’s managerial search, as the Mariners were granted permission to interview Espada just one day prior, seeking a leader with diverse organizational experience and a fresh perspective.
If hired, Espada would become Seattle’s first full-time manager born outside the contiguous United States and the first Spanish-speaking skipper since Lou Piniella, offering a unique cultural connection to the team’s roster.
