Grant Forrest secured his first major championship qualification with a clutch birdie at the 18th hole of the Open de España, finishing at 1-under 70 to earn a spot at the 2027 Masters and the 2027 Open Championship at St. Andrews.
The victory came down to the wire after Forrest and Victor Perez both needed birdies to avoid a playoff, with Forrest’s putt sealing the win despite a shaky front nine that included three bogeys. His resilience paid off as he held off a competitive field, including Eugenio Chacarra, who led at the clubhouse with four birdies on the front nine but faltered on the back nine to finish at 13 under.
Jacob Skov Olesen and Joe Dean, who had shared the lead, both dropped strokes on the final stretch, while Dan Brown’s late-round surge with a 7-under 64 secured him fifth place. Forrest, who had struggled in previous attempts to qualify for Augusta, called the achievement ‘fairy tale stuff,’ highlighting the rarity of a career milestone that had eluded him for over a decade.
