India’s Smriti Mandhana has taken charge as captain ahead of a pivotal three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, marking her first international leadership role. The series, set to begin in Raipur on Friday, also serves as a critical warm-up for India’s upcoming ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027, which will be hosted domestically.
Mandhana has outlined a clear vision for the team, emphasizing improvements in professionalism, power-hitting, and fielding while fostering a cohesive team culture. She has also highlighted the importance of setting benchmarks for younger players to follow, ensuring a sustainable legacy beyond her tenure.
Mandhana’s leadership comes at a transitional phase for the team, with several young players joining the squad. She has expressed admiration for former captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s experience, hoping the younger players will draw inspiration from her approach.
The series against Zimbabwe will also help India refine its playing style ahead of the Champions Trophy, with six T20I matches—including three against South Africa—scheduled before the tournament.
