Alexander Zverev’s bid for a Shanghai Masters title ended abruptly in the semifinals after a three-set upset by unseeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, despite the German’s status as the tournament’s top seed. Zverev, who had already played in the US Open, Laver Cup, and China Open, cited exhaustion from a grueling schedule—including just one day of rest since the US Open—as a key factor in his struggles, particularly against Fokina’s aggressive serve-and-volley tactics.
The loss marked the first time Davidovich Fokina had broken 80% of Zverev’s first-serve points, exposing vulnerabilities on the German’s weaker forehand side during returns. While Zverev acknowledged the physical toll of his season, former ATP player Rob Koenig questioned whether fatigue alone could explain his repeated errors, suggesting the defeat might reflect deeper form issues rather than just fatigue.
The result also secured Zverev’s spot as the 2026 year-end world No. 1, following Carlos Alcaraz’s early exit and Jannik Sinner’s season-ending knee injury.
His next stop will be the Paris Masters, where he’ll look to regain his rhythm after the shock defeat.
