Filipina tennis star **Alex Eala** suffered a stunning first-round exit at the Wuhan Open on Monday, falling in straight sets to unseeded Chinese qualifier **Shi Han** (world No. 217).
Despite entering as the 13th seed and a tournament favorite, Eala—ranked world No. 19—struggled to replicate her usual form, losing 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 in a match where Shi dominated with 12 winners to Eala’s seven.
The defeat marked the second early upset for Eala in recent weeks, following her round-of-16 loss at the Canadian Open in July, which also sparked concerns from her uncle and coach, **Noli Eala**, about her grueling schedule under WTA rules requiring top-tier players to compete in 18–20 tournaments annually, including all Slams and WTA 1000 events. Noli criticized his niece’s lack of energy and composure in the loss, calling it ‘very disappointing,’ while acknowledging Shi’s ‘magnificent’ performance and urging Eala to regroup ahead of her next event, the WTA 500 Ningbo Open in China later this month.
Despite the setback, Eala has shown flashes of brilliance this season, including two singles titles—most notably at the Washington Open, where she defeated top seed Jessica Pegula in the final—while also representing the Philippines in international competition. Her uncle remains confident in her ability to recover, emphasizing her strong support network and long-term potential as she navigates the demands of elite tennis.
