No. 5 Ohio State defeated Maryland 45-16 on Saturday at Ohio Stadium, yet head coach Ryan Day expressed frustration over the Buckeyes' sloppy performance, which included eight penalties totaling 65 yards and two turnovers.
Day attributed the disciplinary issues directly to coaching failures, stating that such mistakes are not indicative of a quality team. Quarterback Julian Sayin completed 13 of 21 passes for 242 yards and four touchdowns, but he also fumbled twice and had a pass deflected for a 52-yard interception return by Maryland linebacker Daniel Wingate.
Sayin acknowledged his ball-security struggles, noting he was disappointed in himself and that the error count could have been even higher. The offense generated 449 total yards, with receiver Jeremiah Smith converting his first two touches into 33- and 40-yard scores, bringing his career receiving touchdown total to 38.
Running back Bo Jackson added 107 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 25-yard run that answered Maryland's only offensive score. Despite the 29-point margin, the Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) face a challenging trip next week to unbeaten Indiana, while Maryland finished with 146 total yards and 10 first downs.
