Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have agreed to end their professional relationship following a challenging 2026 Indian Premier League season, in which the five-time champions secured just four wins. Jayawardene, who led the franchise to IPL titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020, had previously served as the team’s global head of performance from 2022 to 2024 before returning as head coach in 2024.
Despite reaching the playoffs in 2025, the team’s ninth-place finish in 2026 marked a low point, prompting the mutual decision to part ways. Jayawardene reflected on his decade-long association with Mumbai Indians, expressing gratitude for the support of players, staff, and fans, while acknowledging the franchise’s role in his career.
The team is now in the process of appointing a new head coach, with interviews for potential candidates expected to begin next week. Nita Ambani, owner of Mumbai Indians, praised Jayawardene’s leadership and commitment, emphasizing that his contributions will always be remembered as part of the team’s legacy.
