The WNBA Finals will see the Atlanta Dream relocate two of their home games from their usual Gateway Center Arena to the larger State Farm Arena, home of the Atlanta Hawks, due to overwhelming fan demand. The decision follows pressure from Golden State Valkyries owner Joe Lacob, who criticized the disparity between the Dream’s 3,500-seat arena and the Valkyries’ capacity crowds at Chase Center, which regularly draws over 18,000 fans—including sellouts for every home game in the team’s first two seasons and postseason matches.
Lacob’s push for a venue change prompted sharp criticism from sports columnist Christine Brennan, who accused NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert of failing to proactively address the issue. The Dream, meanwhile, have maintained sold-out crowds at Gateway Center for the past three seasons and have also filled State Farm Arena eight times during that span, underscoring their strong local support.
The shift highlights broader challenges in WNBA arena logistics, with the league announcing the move just days before the series begins on October 21 and 24.
