‘My mother told me to stay away from PCB’: Shoaib Akhtar rubbishes reports of taking up Pakistan's chief selector role

October 3, 2026

Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has dismissed widespread rumors suggesting he is set to become the chief selector for the national men's team following a three-nil Test series sweep by England. Speaking during a television broadcast, the former athlete stated that he has no interest in joining the Pakistan Cricket Board and intends to follow his mother's previous counsel to stay away from both the organization and domestic politics.

He added that he is currently traveling in Houston on a private trip and has held no formal meetings with board chairman Mohsin Naqvi regarding any position.

While addressing the speculation, the former pacer emphasized that rumors of his impending appointment are entirely false and speculative. Although he expressed a desire to see the national squad improve, he noted that formal employment within the board is unnecessary because there are numerous alternative avenues to contribute to the sport.

Media reports had previously alleged that the former cricketer had met with the board leadership following a family bereavement, but these claims have now been explicitly rejected.
