Nancy Lieberman, a WNBA Hall of Famer, stated on the 'All The Smoke' podcast that the league's current landscape is defined by jealousy and envy, arguing that Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese were essential to the sport's recent expansion. Lieberman noted that while A'ja Wilson is the top player, Clark's absence from the MVP conversation despite her record-breaking season reflects a divisive atmosphere.
She emphasized that Clark's presence has driven economic growth, noting that players now reach millionaire status due to the new collective bargaining agreement, a shift she attributes largely to the 'Caitlin Clark effect.'
Clark's 2026 season saw her become the first player in WNBA history to accumulate over 800 points and 300 assists, finishing with 891 points and 333 assists. She also set a new record for the most points by a point guard in a single season, averaging 22.3 points and 8.3 assists per game.
Her historic performance on July 17, 2026, against the Seattle Storm included 45 points and 10 assists, the first time a player has recorded at least 40 points and 10 assists in a single game. Despite these achievements, Clark placed fourth in the MVP voting with 212 points and a single first-place vote, while earning First Team All-WNBA honors alongside teammate Kelsey Mitchell.
