Aaron Ashby has established a new Major League Baseball benchmark for consecutive scoreless innings by a relief pitcher in a single postseason, surpassing the previous mark of 16 innings set by Andrew Miller in 2016. Entering the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4 of the 2026 World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays with the score tied at 2-2, Ashby recorded the first out to equal Miller's total before securing a groundout by Junior Caminero to claim the record.
He concluded the ninth with a groundout by Liam Hicks, extending his streak to 16 2/3 innings, and then threw a perfect tenth inning to push the total to 17 2/3, forcing the game into extra innings while Milwaukee held a 3-0 series lead.
The Brewers' reliever has appeared in eight games this postseason against the Padres, Dodgers, and Rays, allowing only one run in total. Ashby also has the opportunity to break Goose Gossage's record for the most scoreless postseason innings by a reliever, a mark of 14 1/3 innings set by the 1981 New York Yankees.
Miller, who won ALCS MVP honors during his record-setting 2016 run with Cleveland, praised Ashby's performance, noting that he enjoyed watching the Brewers' middle reliever serve as a crucial stabilizing force for the team.
