India cricket head coach Gautam Gambhir publicly thanked outgoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar for his leadership, crediting him with guiding the team to three ICC trophies during his tenure. Agarkar’s term as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee concluded on October 4, after he announced in September he would not extend his role beyond the July 2023 start date.
Under his leadership, India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final and won the 2024 T20 World Cup, along with victories in the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup—achievements Gambhir highlighted as proof of Agarkar’s team-first philosophy. With Agarkar’s departure, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha now serves as interim selection chairman, overseeing the recent squad picks for the upcoming New Zealand tour.
The BCCI has opened applications for the vacant full-time position, with Parthiv Patel and Ojha among potential candidates based on their seniority as former Test cricketers.
