The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins turned their season around with a dominant weekend, securing back-to-back wins in commanding fashion. After a slow start, the team routed Hartford 7–1 on Saturday and followed it up with a 6–2 victory over Providence on Sunday, combining for an impressive 13–3 aggregate score.
Offensive standouts included Rutger McGroarty, who tallied three goals and two assists, while rookie Bill Zonnon matched that with a 3G+1A performance. Avery Hayes, Mikhail Ilyin, and Atley Calvert each contributed to the scoring surge, while defenseman Ilya Solovyov made his AHL debut alongside Lucas Ciona, adding depth to the lineup.
The goalies also shone, with Joel Blomqvist and Taylor Gauthier combining for 63 saves across the two games, including Gauthier’s career-best 39-stop performance in the Providence win. Meanwhile, the Penguins absorbed the trade of Caleb Jones—sent to Pittsburgh for Ryan Johnson, who was immediately called up to bolster the parent club’s depth while Trevor van Riemsdyk recovers from injury.
With Solovyov now in the fold, the team appears well-positioned to maintain its momentum despite the loss of Jones, who had been a key offensive contributor.
