Why is a Formula 1 race 305 kilometres long? Race distances from 1950 to 2027

Formula 1 grand prix events are structured around a standard distance requirement that always surpasses 305 kilometres, calculated by completing however many circuits are needed to cross that threshold. The sole exception on the calendar is the historic event held in Monaco, where the shortened distance threshold is set to 260 kilometres instead.

In addition to distance metrics, regulations impose strict time caps on proceedings, restricting actual competition time to a maximum of two hours. Furthermore, if race officials must halt an event, the combined duration including any stoppage cannot exceed a three-hour window.
