Why are there Europa League matches on Wednesday?

The 2026-27 Europa League campaign kicks off a day earlier than usual, staging the initial set of league phase fixtures on Wednesday night. While Thursdays serve as the standard slot for both this tournament and the Conference League—barring occasional date adjustments caused by local territorial overlaps—this shift forms part of an exclusive game week allocated entirely to the competition.

A slate of nine fixtures, featuring sides such as Lyon, Celtic, Benfica, Sunderland, and AC Milan, will be contested on Wednesday, leaving the remaining nine encounters to wrap up the matchweek on Thursday.

This schedule structure originated during the 2024-25 restructuring, when each of the three European tournaments adopted a single-table league model. Under this setup, all competitions receive a dedicated showcase week: the Champions League occupied an expanded window across Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during its first matchday last week, whereas the Conference League will take center stage exclusively during its concluding round of phase fixtures this December.
