What Manchester's 'super-profit' deal with City owners has paid out so far

October 13, 2026

Manchester City Council has earned nearly £3 million from a 2014 agreement with Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG), the owners of Manchester City, designed to share profits from high-value developments in Ancoats and New Islington. The deal, part of a broader partnership called Manchester Life, was negotiated amid weak market conditions following the 2008 financial crash, with land valuations conducted by independent experts.

However, critics argue the council’s financial transparency remains limited, as the terms of the profit-sharing arrangement were kept confidential, making it difficult to assess whether the council secured the most favorable terms. ADUG, led by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan—a senior UAE official and current vice president—acquired Manchester City for £200 million in 2008, later transforming the club into a Premier League powerhouse with eight titles, including the first three under their ownership.

Yet the council’s relationship with ADUG has faced renewed scrutiny following Manchester City’s recent guilty verdict on 115 charges, including allegations of disguised funding that saw over £800 million in owner contributions to the club’s finances. The council has acknowledged potential weaknesses in monitoring these deals, with an internal review highlighting gaps in documentation and oversight, particularly for older agreements.

Despite these concerns, the council maintains the regeneration projects have delivered £1.25 billion in value to the city, though questions persist about the full extent of ADUG’s financial gains, particularly through offshore entities in Jersey where transparency is lower.
