What Iga Swiatek now needs to qualify for the WTA Finals after suffering shock loss at the China Open

October 9, 2026

World No. 1 Iga Świątek’s season has taken a sharp turn after her unexpected quarterfinal exit at the China Open, where she fell in straight sets to Elise Mertens.

The loss—her first since a fourth-round upset at the US Open—has left the Polish star with dwindling chances to secure a spot at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, where only two spots remain unclaimed. Świątek currently sits 10th in the race with 3,584 points, trailing Elina Svitolina (4,809) and Karolina Muchová (4,400), while Marta Kostyuk (3,910) holds the next-best tally outside the top four.

With just the Wuhan Open and two WTA 500 events left on the calendar, her path hinges on a deep run in China’s final WTA 1000 of the year, where a title would net her 1,000 points—a critical boost to reach 4,584. However, even that would require others above her in the standings to falter, as Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have already locked in their places with 5,825 and 5,654 points, respectively.

Świątek’s next opportunity begins in Ningbo, followed by Tokyo, but her slim margin of error underscores the urgency of her remaining schedule.
