In the Champions League a player is handed a one‑match ban once they collect four yellow cards, and this rule applies from the group stage right through to the quarter‑finals. After the quarter‑finals all cautions are erased, meaning further yellow cards no longer lead to suspension.
During the opening two rounds five players have already picked up two cautions each, putting them just two yellows away from a ban. The competition also imposes a one‑match suspension each time a player reaches an even number of yellows beyond four – for example six, eight or ten cautions trigger another ban.
