Andy Murray credited his former coach Ivan Lendl with providing the final confidence boost needed to break through in major tournaments, a partnership that began in December 2011 after the Scot had reached eight Grand Slam semifinals between 2008 and 2011. During that earlier period, Murray was defeated in the final rounds by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, or Novak Djokovic in every instance except the 2009 Wimbledon final, where he lost to Andy Roddick.
Following Lendl's appointment, Murray captured the Brisbane International title and reached the Australian Open semifinals before falling to Federer in the 2012 Wimbledon final. He subsequently defeated Federer in the Olympic men's singles final to secure a gold medal and then claimed his first Grand Slam trophy by beating Djokovic at the US Open that September.
Murray later added a Wimbledon title in 2013 with Lendl before the two parted ways in 2014.
