We know Haaland's goal was a mistake - but WHY did it happen?

Erling Haaland scored a disputed decider for Manchester City in Sunday's derby against Manchester United, sparking major debate over the officiating process. While the on-field crew originally waved off the strike for offside, video review reversed the call after determining that Patrick Dorgu had kept Haaland onside.

However, teammate Enzo Fernandez was clearly in an offside spot while lunging for a header inside the six-yard area, which should have invalidated the play regardless of whether he made contact.

Professional Game Referees, recently rebranded from PGMOL, conceded later that evening that confirming the strike was an error in judgement, as the video assistant failed to account for Fernandez's clear influence on the action. Replays and match communications suggested the review team became overly fixated on whether Fernandez grazed the ball rather than evaluating his interference.
