Former India batsman Wasim Jaffer has entered the race for the senior national selector role, which became available after Ajit Agarkar’s contract was not renewed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Jaffer, who played 31 Test matches for India and scored nearly 2,000 runs—including five centuries, such as a double hundred against the West Indies and a hundred in South Africa—has confirmed his application for the position.
His extensive Test experience, the highest among candidates, could theoretically make him eligible to lead the selection committee under existing rules, which favor the zone with the most Test appearances. However, the BCCI is reportedly leaning toward retaining Pragyan Ojha, who has 24 Test caps, as chairman of the selection panel.
This preference could shape the final composition, potentially including former spinner Ramesh Powar, who played two Tests, as part of the new committee.
