Venus Williams confirmed to play opponent 28 years younger than her in first match since the US Open

Venus Williams is set to resume her professional career at the Guangzhou Open, marking her first appearance since a first-round exit at the US Open. The 46-year-old veteran, who has struggled to secure a singles victory since July 2025, faces a challenging opening match against 18-year-old prospect Lilli Tagger.

Tagger enters the tournament with significant momentum, having claimed the junior Roland Garros title and a maiden WTA trophy in Prague earlier this year. When Tagger was born in early 2008, Williams had already secured six of her seven Grand Slam singles titles and reached the world number one ranking.

Beyond her singles campaign, Williams is also scheduled to compete in the doubles draw alongside Janice Tjen.
