Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has delivered a sharp critique of the proposed expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams, arguing that such a move would diminish the significance of conference championships. Speaking on a radio show, Meyer rejected the idea of reducing the weight of games like the Big Ten Championship, calling it a step too far.
He also questioned the motives behind the expansion, suggesting that coaches may be pushing for it to protect their jobs rather than improve the sport. Meyer’s comments come as discussions heat up over potential changes to the playoff structure, including the possibility of eliminating conference title games entirely.
Under the proposed model, eight first-round playoff games would be played on campuses during the second weekend of December, followed by eight second-round matchups the following week. The new format would allocate four spots to Power Five conferences and one to the Group of Six, with the remaining 19 going to at-large teams, further altering the landscape of college football’s postseason.
