The NCAA has implemented a sweeping new rule that restricts men’s basketball and football coaches from attending any games outside their own programs, effective immediately. The policy, approved by the Division I cabinet, aims to curb potential transfer portal tampering by limiting in-person interactions between coaching staffs and players who may be considering transfers.
Exceptions exist for events where a school is directly involved—such as the NCAA basketball tournament—or if a coach has a family member participating in the game. For example, UConn head coach Dan Hurley could no longer attend Boston College’s November 3 game against Wagner, even though it’s near Boston, or Holy Cross’s November 11 matchup with Furman, just 45 miles from UConn’s campus.
The rule also allows FBS football coaches to watch bowl games in their home stadiums or College Football Playoff contests, while FCS coaches can attend the national championship or playoff title game. Basketball staff may still attend postseason events like the NCAA tournament or other approved games.
