UCLA head coach Bob Chesney praised Oregon counterpart Dan Lanning for his personal outreach following the injury to Bruins senior quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Lanning contacted Chesney regarding Iamaleava's medical status after the player was forced to exit the October 10 matchup at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, and is currently expected to be sidelined indefinitely.
The two coaches, both considered young for the college football landscape, have demonstrated a mutual respect that extends beyond the field; Chesney previously offered to check on Ducks quarterback Dante Moore after Moore suffered a concussion in a game against USC. The incident involving Iamaleava occurred late in the second quarter when he was tackled by Oregon senior defensive lineman Bear Alexander and junior linebacker Jerry Mixon on the Ducks' 22-yard line.
Although Iamaleava briefly returned to the field and threw an interception, he left for halftime in street clothes, sparking online debate over the nature of the contact.
