Tuchel must win back trust ahead of pivotal England camp

Thomas Tuchel faces a crucial stretch in his role as England manager as he attempts to mend relations with supporters and senior squad members following the 2026 World Cup. Under his leadership alongside assistant Anthony Barry, the Three Lions secured third place—their best finish at a World Cup played abroad and their strongest campaign since 1966.

While the Football Association deemed the overall run a success and extended the German tactician's deal through Euro 2028 back in February, discontent mounted after a 2-1 semi-final loss to an Argentina side steered by Lionel Messi.

The friction stemmed from late tactical shifts in Atlanta, where England surrendered a one-goal advantage by adopting an ultra-cautious posture. Tuchel subsequently claimed his squad dropped deep against his instructions and controversially questioned whether English players possess the natural ability to retain possession under duress.

Those remarks sparked frustration among established team leaders as the squad travelled to New Jersey for the third-place contest, undermining the strong unity Tuchel had cultivated since taking charge in January 2025.
