India’s vice-captain Tilak Varma has opened up about his preference for batting at number three in T20 Internationals, a position he has consistently favored since his early career. The left-handed batter, who made his T20I debut against the West Indies in August 2023, has played across multiple spots—from opener to number six—but revealed that his natural inclination remains in the top order.
Varma, who has represented India in 16 T20I matches since June 2026, has primarily batted at number five or below, scoring 327 runs at an average of 46.71 and a strike rate of 145.33 during this period. Despite the challenges of adjusting to the lower middle order, including adapting to older balls and slower deliveries, he has emphasized the mental and technical work required to excel in that role, highlighting his determination to perform when needed by the team.
