Tom Pidcock nearly quit the Tre Valli Varesine after a police cruiser drove the wrong direction onto the course and struck two of his Pinarello-Q36.5 squad members during the Italian classic. Marcel Camprubi managed to keep riding, whereas Thomas Gloag had to abandon the competition and receive knee stitches.
Pidcock ultimately secured second place behind sprint winner Jarno Widar, though he voiced intense frustration over the safety breakdown following previous tragedies in the sport. In August, Pidcock claimed another cross-country world title and dedicated that victory to Finlay Tarling, a teenager who lost his life in a collision with an errant van during a Portuguese stage race.
