Texas Tech quarterback **Thomas Castellanos** has received a temporary legal reprieve, allowing him to return to the team just in time for the Red Raiders’ upcoming showdown against Arizona State. Castellanos, who has been navigating eligibility challenges as part of the NCAA’s extended fifth-year provisions, was initially ruled ineligible after a judicial panel overturned his earlier approval.
Despite the setback—including being sidelined during Texas Tech’s October win over Colorado—he has now been cleared to participate, offering head coach **Joey McGuire** additional flexibility in the offense. While **Will Hammond** remains the primary starter at quarterback, Castellanos’ versatility as a dual-threat playmaker could play a key role, especially in special packages where his rushing ability has proven effective in limited action this season.
The 23-year-old, who previously played at UCF, Boston College, and Florida State, has already shown flashes of productivity, completing 2-of-4 passes for 35 yards and two touchdowns while adding 44 rushing yards and two more scores in prior appearances. With eligibility disputes still unresolved for fifth-year players, Castellanos’ return adds another layer of uncertainty ahead of Saturday’s 3:30 p.m.
