Former No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons will miss the remainder of the 2024–25 NBA season after tearing his right Achilles tendon during a practice drill on October 18.
The Sacramento Kings confirmed the injury via MRI and announced Simmons will undergo surgery, ending any hopes of him contributing to the team’s season opener against the Los Angeles Clippers this Wednesday. The injury is a severe setback for Simmons, who signed a one-year, $3.5 million non-guaranteed contract with the Kings earlier this month after spending last season unsigned.
His role this season was expected to be limited to backup point guard duties behind rookie Darius Acuff Jr., though he had shown flashes of his playmaking and scoring ability in preseason action, including a 25-minute outing last Friday where he recorded 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and a steal against the San Antonio Spurs. The torn Achilles marks another major injury in a career already plagued by setbacks, including a fractured right foot in 2016–17 and recurring knee and leg issues from 2021 onward.
