A historic underdog story unfolds in this season’s Europa League as S.C.U Torreense, a Portuguese second-division club last in the top flight over three decades ago, prepare to host Premier League side Sunderland in their first-ever European home match. The 35-mile Lisbon suburb club, managed by Luis Tralhão, secured their Europa League debut by defeating Sporting CP in the Taca de Portugal final earlier this year—a triumph that marked the first time a second-tier Portuguese team had won the national cup since its 1938 inception.
Torreense’s campaign has already exceeded expectations, earning three points from their opening two games, including a 2-1 victory over Lillestrøm in their European debut. Their upcoming fixtures feature heavyweights like Ferencváros, Celtic, and Olympiacos, with captain Stopira—also a Cape Verde international—leading the charge in what club director André Sabino calls a ‘landmark moment’ for the club.
With Portugal’s domestic leagues ranked outside UEFA’s top five, Torreense’s participation carries added weight as they aim to compete rather than merely participate in Europe’s second-tier competition.
