Andrea Kimi Antonelli is poised to secure the 2026 Formula 1 world championship in Mexico City after his ninth victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix. The Italian driver currently holds a 123-point lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, needing only a ninth-place finish to clinch the title.
While the championship appears decided, a tight contest for second place has emerged. Russell currently holds the runner-up spot, but he faces pressure from Lewis Hamilton, who trails by one point, as well as Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris.
Russell has publicly dismissed the significance of finishing anywhere other than first, though failing to secure second in the standings could be viewed as a setback for his momentum heading into the next season.
