Overcoming a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven postseason series is one of the rarest feats in baseball, with only one team ever succeeding in the modern era. The 2004 Boston Red Sox defied expectations by rallying from three games down against the New York Yankees in the ALCS, ending an 86-year World Series drought in the process.
Their journey began with a dramatic ninth-inning tie in Game 4, sparked by a stolen base and a clutch single before David Ortiz’s walk-off homer sealed the win. The Red Sox then forced a Game 6 with back-to-back extra-inning victories, including another Ortiz walk-off, before Curt Schilling—playing through a severe ankle injury—pitched a legendary performance to send the series back to Boston.
Despite the odds, only the Red Sox have ever pulled off this historic comeback, while four other teams have at least pushed their series to a sixth game after falling three games behind.
The most recent team to attempt such a climb is the 2026 Los Angeles Dodgers, back-to-back World Series champions who now face a daunting task after dropping the first three games of the NLCS to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers, who swept Milwaukee in the 2025 NLCS, will look to right-hander Tyler Glasnow to begin their turnaround in Game 4, though the uphill battle remains steep given the statistical rarity of such comebacks.
