Tennessee's win over No. 1 Auburn, Bo Jackson in 1985

September 29, 2026

Ahead of the upcoming weekend clash between the two programs, a look back at their 1985 meeting reveals a historic milestone for the Volunteers. On September 28 of that year, a massive crowd of 94358 spectators watched Tennessee secure a 38-20 upset victory over the top-ranked Tigers in Knoxville.

The hosts dominated the opening half, building a commanding 24-0 lead before intermission. Quarterback Tony Robinson orchestrated the offense effectively, passing for 259 yards and four touchdowns while also contributing 33 yards on the ground.

Teammate Keith Davis added 102 rushing yards, and Charles Wilson chipped in another score via the run. Through the air, Tim McGee paced the receiving corps with 163 yards and a touchdown, complemented by scoring receptions from Joey Clinkscales, Vince Carter, and Eric Swanson.

For the visitors, star running back Bo Jackson accumulated 80 rushing yards before being forced to the sidelines by an injury during the third quarter. Auburn managed to put all 20 of their points on the scoreboard during the final period after Jackson's departure, but the early deficit proved insurmountable.

That memorable triumph remains the last time the program defeated an opponent holding the number one spot in the AP Poll.
