Tennessee’s quarterback situation ahead of Saturday’s showdown with Alabama has taken an unexpected turn, as freshman Faizon Brandon—who has been sidelined by injury—will be available for the game. Despite his return, head coach Josh Heupel has opted to start redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, who has stepped in after Brandon’s benching against Auburn.
MacIntyre’s performance against Arkansas was mixed, completing 18 of 29 passes for 247 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, while Brandon’s overall freshman campaign includes 697 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 130 rushing yards with three scores on the ground. The Vols’ offense will continue to rely heavily on junior running back DeSean Bishop, who has been a standout with 678 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, though he faced a tougher test against Texas, managing just 34 yards.
Wide receiver Mike Matthews also figures to be a key playmaker, having already amassed 396 receiving yards, three touchdowns, and 22 catches this season. With Alabama’s defense poised to test Tennessee’s depth at quarterback, Heupel’s decision adds an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup.
