During the October 3 matchup against Auburn, the Tennessee Volunteers benched freshman starting quarterback Faizon Brandon in favor of sophomore backup George MacIntyre during the second quarter. At the time of the substitution with under four minutes remaining before halftime, Tennessee faced a 7-3 deficit following a sluggish offensive performance.
Prior to his removal, Brandon struggled heavily behind an improvised offensive line, completing three of eight passing attempts for zero yards alongside an interception deep in home territory that set up Auburn's opening points. He also contributed minus nine rushing yards across four carries, which featured consecutive sacks and a twelve-yard loss on a lateral play.
Meanwhile, MacIntyre entered the contest having previously accumulated sixty-two passing yards and one touchdown across three earlier substitute appearances.
