Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has publicly criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India over the calendar overlap between the Ranji Trophy and India A fixtures. The domestic tournament launched its 2026-27 season on October 11 with thirty-eight squads participating in nineteen opening round games, but several prominent athletes missed out on representing their regional sides due to concurrent India A duties.
Key performers like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devdutt Padikkal, and Rajat Patidar were unavailable for domestic action because of these overlapping commitments, which will continue when India A travels to New Zealand for three unofficial Test matches later in October. Gavaskar expressed concern that running the second-tier team fixtures concurrently with domestic competitions devalues historical statistics and prevents selectors from accurately evaluating players who eventually transition to international play.
