Steve Smith eyes 2028 Olympics but makes no Ashes promise: ‘I don’t even know if I'll be there yet'

Australian batting star Steve Smith has cast doubt on his participation in the forthcoming Ashes tour of England, admitting he approaches his Test career one assignment at a time. The 37-year-old veteran has played 125 Tests, amassing 37 hundreds at an average of 54, but has never celebrated an away Ashes triumph despite playing in the 2-2 draws of 2019 and 2023; Australia's last series win in England occurred in 2001.

While not setting a definitive departure date, the former skipper stated he is uncertain if he will feature in next summer's clashes.

Instead, Smith is prioritizing a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket makes its return after a 128-year hiatus. The right-hander, who will turn 39 by the time the Games begin, outlined his ambitions while representing the Amsterdam Flames in the European T20 Premier League in Dublin, which coincided with England finishing a clean-sweep Test series over Pakistan.
