The Pittsburgh Steelers have added cornerback Terrell Smith to their active roster, signing him off Washington’s practice squad. Smith, a former fifth-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2023, logged 26 games over his first two seasons before suffering a patellar tendon injury last year.
After being released by Chicago earlier this summer, he joined the Commanders’ practice squad before landing in Pittsburgh. The move created no roster crunch, as the Steelers had an open spot following Monday’s transactions, including the release of linebacker Bradyn Swinson to clear space for defensive lineman K.J.
Henry on the practice squad. Smith’s Bears tenure included 68 tackles, an interception, 10 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, though his injury shortened his 2023 campaign.
Smith’s arrival adds depth to Pittsburgh’s secondary, where he could contribute as a versatile defender. His experience at the NFL level, even with a setback, may prove valuable in a Steelers unit looking to bolster its defensive play.
The roster shuffle also reflects the team’s ongoing efforts to refine its depth chart ahead of the upcoming season.
